The Second Reading Revolution in 18th-Century Italy

By Brendan Dooley
English

During the course of the eighteenth century in Italy, radical new ideas about reading inspired writers to refine their strategies for inspiring action by their works. In response to the increase in readers and reading material, writers of the periodical literature of Enlightenment looked to the psychology of subjectivity for new modes of literary expression. By adopting language deliberately designed to spark readers to read imaginatively and creatively, they sought to cloak their reforming ideas in a new discourse of collusion and intimacy. This way they hoped to promote their political and social programs without ignoring the different meanings different readers might derive from what they wrote.
