The Return of Intellectual History: A Conservative Revolution or a Recovery Program?

Long considered at the margins of the discipline of history, intellectual history as the history of science or global history knows a comeback that is not easy to explain. Should we consider that the methods of intellectual history drew the attention of generalists historians? Should we rather consider this return as the mark of a reaffirmation of disciplinary boundaries between history and philosophy? Should we still see a recovery program on other bases? This article passes in review these different historiographical proposals.
