Duhamel du Monceau: A Meteorologist

By Jérémy Desarthe
English

Known for his contributions in the domain agriculture in the Enlightenment era, Duhamel du Monceau was also a pioneer in meteorology. For forty years, he carried out several botanico-meteorological observations which offer an exceptional archival opportunity for the history of the climate today. They allow a fine reconstruction of the variability of the climate in la Beauce during the second half of the eighteenth century. Furthermore, his career within the Royal Academy of the Sciences reveals the various national and European networks which enabled him to integrate climatic factors into his scientific works.
