The Count of Provence and His Buildings Bursar: A Unique Partnership (1771 – 1791)
The comte de Provence, who was to become King Louis XVIII (1755-1824),is neglected but important patron of the arts. Far from being the caricature held by French Revolution, another portrait of the prince can be drawn through the study of the work of his superintendant of Finances and Arts, Cromot du Bourg. The comte de Provence’s curiosity encompassed arts of all kind: painting, architecture, literature or decorative arts. Cromot du Bourg took a main part in this action. Financial expert in the “contrôle général des Finances”,friend of numerous ministers, at ease with court members, Cromot shared his experience and relationships to enlighten the artistic patronage of his prince. Their close links and mutual confidence proved an original partnership between the two men among Louis XVI’s court.
