Authority, Legitimacy, and Loyalty: The Leaguers of Languedoc and Recognition of Henry IV
Although negotiations started as early as March 1594, it took nearly two years for the “league” of Languedoc to recognize Henri IV as their king. This was rather surprising if we consider what historiography says about France at the end of the Religious wars: an exhausted realm, subjects who were rebelling to protest against the aristocratic egoistic conduct, a king presented as a new Messiah, a reign which promised to be a new golden age for the kingdom. The “league” of Languedoc was reluctant to acknowledge Henri as their king because they had doubts about the sincerity of his conversion to Catholicism. Divisions within their movement also made the situation more difficult to handle. In a kingdom which was still under construction, the Wars of Religion and the Leaguers’ reconciliation with the king helped define where authority had to rest at the provincial level.
