A History of Film Technology: The Example of Sound before “Talkies”
Inventing an Art
By Martin BarnierEnglish
The History of film technology had been mostly technological until today. Instead of looking for the “birth” of the movies, we should try to find all the different forms of shows that the media were mixed with. Before 1914, it was totally impossible to say that the audience was “going to the movies”. If we look at a few examples of sounds made for films during the so-called “silent era” and following the works of Rick Altman, we realize that we need to read the press of that time carefully. It obliged the historian to reconsider what was the history of movie techniques.
