Le Canard Enchaîné: A Political Journal without a Political Bias
Political Locations and Actors
By Laurent MartinEnglish
The satirical weekly, Le Canard enchaîné, founded in 1915 and still running strong, is an “unidentified political object”. Linked by scholars and by successive members of the editorial staff themselves either with the great anarchical tradition, or with an ultra-republican trend, it blends articles and cartoons which project radical or communist tendencies and even right-wing anarchical references. This extraordinarily composite political culture (which could even be called “political cultures”), without any party connections, is one of the clues of its long-lasting success; this original catch-all formula attracted many readers to Le Canard enchaîné and this renewed its audience, thus adjusting itself to new conditions.
