Medical Doctors and the Stigmatization of Onanism (Late 18th Century to Early 19th Century)

Medical Institutions: Social Norms and Uses
By Anne Carol
English

Medical obsession about onanism, beginning in the eighteenth century, is already well-known. This work rather tries to point out one of the dissuasive strategies managed by physicians, according to Tissot’s first model, which is based on two complementary aspects: demonstrating the nastiness of masturbation, through a scientific work, but also showing the inevitable fall of the onanist in a terrific stage. Some examples drawn from medical books, pictures illustrating them, and from pedagogic museums, seem to prove that the tragic fall of the onanist is getting growing attention, while the scientific demonstration becomes nearly subordinate.
